There are so many abused and traumatised children in and around the city. Social workers struggle to find suitable places of safety in a crisis. This could result in traumatised children being placed with families that are not equipped to provide for their special needs. These children may then be exposed to secondary trauma and the care family experience feelings of inadequacy.

 

Statistics show that many placements of children in alternative care fail because of lack of training and support to care givers. Many men and women don’t realize the importance of gaining skills to communicate with and care for abused and traumatised children. Statutory social workers focus on removing the child from his/her abusive circumstances and then on rehabilitating the biological parents, with no or very little support to the removed child/children and foster parents or care givers.
